Free Challengeing A Belief Or Idea Essay Sample

Reflect on a time when you challenged a belief or idea. What prompted you to act? Would you make the same decision again?
About three months ago, I came across an article in the newspaper that highlighted the challenges faced by students in their pursuit of college education. It stated how college students give in to peer pressure and result in drug abuse, irresponsible sexual behavior and laxity in academics due to the freedom that comes along when one joins that phase of education. I was inclined to challenge the idea and constantly looked at the positive side of college which is to further ones education, to meet and socialize with new friends and to learn life skills. In y opinion, the negativity associated with joining college was a result of irrational judgment by the propagators of the belief who were mainly newspaper editors and other media personalities.
With this regard, I have set out to apply for college in order to prove this common belief wrong because I believe that each freshman in college determines his own destiny. I am not totally negligent of the fact that drug abuse, promiscuity, laxity in academic and a myriad of other vices are present in college. However, the extent to which they have been emphasized makes it seem as if they are a sure thing to happen to every student which I think is wrong. As a new student, I plan to prove this belief wrong with strict religious guidance and making sure that I hang out with the right group of friends with whom we share the same views. My year as a freshman in college should be one of the best years because I expect to learn a great deal in and out of class coupled with the rare chance to interact with personalities from all over the country. If presented with the same situation, I would still stick to my stand that it all boils down to the individual and how he or she handles his college life.
