Today’s generation is all about video games, TV, fast foods, computers, i-phones, etc. It appears like parents have lost hold on their children and seek to gain their love by lavishing them with extra gifts and treats. The lack of guidance has resulted in an epidemic known as child obesity that has quadrupled its victims over the last three decades. In 2012, records indicated that more than a third of the kids were obese or overweight. Various firms have witnessed the social and global problem and have taken a step to curb the issue. This article looks at the Hawaii Initiative for Childhood Obesity Research and Education (HICORE).
Obesity is a condition where a person has excess fat in his or her body. It mostly happens due to inadequate dietary skills and minimal physical exercise. The HICORE organization gives multi-disciplinary and collaborative leadership to education and research concerning nutrition, physical activity, and child obesity in Hawaii. They believe that developing the world with healthy households and kids can make everything possible. The physical and eating patterns of an individual should begin in early childhood (HICORE, 2010).
HICORE has a slogan where they say 5-2-1-0 Let’s Go! as a way to direct families to start promoting their children’s healthy lifestyles at an early age. The aspect of living healthy is not easy especially during a time where many things are available; hence, HICORE encourages people to start slowly while taking one step at each point and thinking big (HICORE, 2010). The numbers in their slogan stand for fruits, vegetables, and roots daily, less screen time, more physical activities daily, and no sugary things. With the help of such determined firms, the globe is drawing nearer to eradicating child obesity.
