In this assignment, we interviewed Pastor Jonathan, a Christian Protestant pastor working with the WorthyLife Christian Fellowship. In the interview, the pastor was asked his worldviews and philosophy concerning euthanasia. Below is a summary of the views he expressed concerning the issue.
First, being a spiritual leader who subscribes to the Christian faith, Pastor Jonathan holds the view that God exclusively holds the power over life and death. He believes that any human being has no power whatsoever to end another person’s life. Indeed, Jonathan points out that one has no power even over one’s life. He supports this view with the following verse from the Bible: “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20 New King James Version). Based on Pastor Jonathan’s interpretation of the verse, we do not own our life. Rather, we are stewards of our life. Therefore, he argues, the power to end the human life under any circumstance is exclusively held by God.
Pastor Jonathan also argues that the quality of life we lead should not form the basis for making decisions to end anyone’s life. He argues that people are misled to believe that a life free from suffering is of a higher quality than life characterised with suffering. Rather, he argues that the quality of life should be judged on the basis of how it fulfils the will of God. Jonathan further argues that we should accept suffering as part of life since Jesus also underwent suffering while on earth. Therefore, the suffering of a patient with terminal illness is not an excuse for assisted suicide. Consequently, Jonathan finds euthanasia a violation of God’s will. He points out that the practice is gaining acceptance in the American society because the society is increasingly becoming secularised with many people abandoning Christian ideologies.
