Johannes Brahms is one of the most outstanding composers in history. His legacy has been analyzed by his supporters up to present day. His First Symphony started with C minor and ends with C major, helping the audience to experience a wide range of bright emotions throughout the symphony. First Symphony by Brahms consists of four movements, and the last one was called A Hungarian Dance for its joyful rhythm.
First movement, or Varied Sonata, of the First Symphony starts with adagio and piu andante tempos. Sonata develops from adagio at the beginning to allegro in the end. Popular music, unlike the classical one, usually has the same tempo throughout the song/melody. As for the classical music, most composers like Brahms experiment with different tempos throughout the movements of the symphonies thanks to their large size. Most pop-music songs last about 3 minutes, while movements last at least 10 minutes. To this end, composers usually make the entire flow of music more complicated and diverse to help the audience relax and experience various emotions throughout the symphony.
First movement starts with adagio, C minor, and ends with piu andante, C major. Various performing techniques such as tremolo are used throughout the movement. Brahms included an alpine horn into his orchestra while playing First Symphony. An alpine horn makes deep sounds to facilitate the background of the melody. First movement goes to exposition with allegro non troppo, C major. After the allegro C major exposition goes D major transition. Afterwards, the tempo recapitulates, that is to say repeats the previous tempo. Finally, the movement ends with piu andante to make the audience calm down and get prepared for the end of the movement of the symphony.
Johannes Brahms like many other composers deliberately used various tempos and performing techniques to make the music sound complex and diverse. Extreme diversity of tempos and musical instruments involved demonstrate a comparative advantage of classical music over popular music, which is far simple. Pop-music songs usually have the same beat throughout the song. Furthermore, classical music rarely has a beat, made by drums. At that point, rare use of drums in case of classical music makes it far more relaxing than popular music. Drum-like beat can irritate sometimes, and classical music is an excellent way to relax and release tension.
Classical music somehow improves mental health and endurance thanks to more natural flow of sounds. Many studies on the impact of classical music on human health conclude classical music improves blood pressure and removes depression. Classical music improves communication skills and memory. Such improvements were labeled as “Mozart effect.” Classical music is being used in some hospitals to relieve the pain of the patients after anesthesia.
As a conclusion, classical music is more natural for human perception, improving mental health and memory within the framework of so called “Mozart effect.” Classical music is far more diverse than popular or any other music genre, thanks to complex structure of tempos and large number of musical instruments involved. A rare use of drums in case of classical music also makes is more relaxing, helping to reach the best possible relaxing effect. Constant change of tempos and tones throughout the movements of the symphonies help to avoid having the audience bored. Consequently, the audience is able of listening to long pieces of music because they contain various transitions from slow to quick tempo, and vice versa.
