Communism refers to an economic ideology that advocates equality of economic resources through elimination of private property. According to Karl Marx, famously known as the father of communism, injustice and suffering have sprouted as a result of capitalism. Under capitalism, the ‘means of production’ such as factories, equipment, etc are privately owned by individuals and corporations. The owners of such property then take advantage of the working class who sell their labor to earn wages. Therefore, as per the communist ideals, a new society must be established, one that is classless and does not involve ownership of private property and profits.
In a communist society, people do not have freedom of choice. The State assigns work to each individual and resources are rationed. People ought to be content with what they have, the government is responsible to provide its citizens with social services, such as health, education and leisure/recreational services. Due to complete state control, a communist community can enjoy the following benefits; the foremost of which is full employment of manpower, thus no person is unemployed. Since, the government takes into account the welfare of the entire society and its citizens; there is equal distribution of income and wealth. Moreover, the government strives to achieve economic growth and rapid development. Although there are quite a few benefits of communism, no society in the world today is entirely based on this system.
Communism failed for several reasons; it was unable to provide the necessary incentives to the workforce to keep it motivated and productive, there are no real gains to pay for hard work so it raises the question that why should a worker put in extra effort if he/she will end up getting the same reward as for doing the bare minimal. Communist societies slowly drifted towards stagnation. Since, there was no unemployment in the societies, people had no fear of being fired, and therefore, they did not struggle to reach their highest potential. As there was no emphasis on economic efficiency, the entire focus was on quantity and the achievement of production targets; as a result the goods lacked quality. Due to the above mentioned drawbacks, communism’s greatest failing was its inability to innovate and bring in new ideas and because of this, it failed as an economic system.
