Volunteering relates to giving service to other people or participating in a cause to assist a certain project without expecting any form of remuneration or reward for the services rendered. Volunteer work can be rendered in a number of areas but the most significant is social work. Participating in volunteer work helps in instilling a sense of responsibility among students while at the same time helping others. Situations in the community that may require volunteer work may emanate in cases of disasters where humanitarian efforts may lack the sufficient work force to assist the affected people. Additionally, volunteer work may involve distribution of clothes and food to the less fortunate, conducting environmental cleanup exercises and promoting health programs in the society.
Presence of needy patients in the Union Hospital has moved me to offer my assistance through their charitable group called the Service League. The volunteer tasks involve addressing prayer requests, doing clerical work, answering the telephone and responding to mails as well as assisting in the registration of patients.
The volunteer work is done on a weekly basis, although one can go on different days and sometimes include the weekends. The volunteer services I have offered in the ICU include linking hospital staff and family members. This was on Monday. On Wednesday, I managed to assist in the geriatrics ward where I engaged some of the older patients in conversations to reduce their boredom. On the next shift on Friday, I managed to provide company to patients in the cancer ward.
The experience of taking part in a volunteer program gives me a sense of joy and satisfaction since I was able to make someone else’s life a little bit better. Hospital staff is grateful for the assistance in doing certain tasks such as offering support to the sick patients. I hope to participate in other volunteer work in hospital especially in the raising of funds for the construction of waste disposal facility.
