Movie Summary of “Damaged Care”
The film tells the story of a devoted and affectionate doctor in a medical agency that has an unethical and iniquitous way of accommodating patient because of the rules that the agency applied in order to have a more sufficient supply of income. Dr. Linda Peeno is returnee in this kind of work because she has been spending her time taking care of her children and his stepson. She’s the one who raised her children because her husband is working to become an OB/GYN physician. When Linda decides to return to her work, she immediately receives a work from an agency which offers quite a big salary. The agency also hates doctors which offer unnecessary operations and unessential medical treatments to acquire more fees but lessen the budget of the agency which affects the salary and benefits of other employees working there. Because of being a principled physician who really has concern for his co-employees, she agrees on that way of servicing people – people he thinks don’t deserve to have the treatment she wants. In the following days she really did reject patients whom she really thinks do not have serious illnesses.
Dr. Linda really believes in herself that she can really make the right decision until such time that there is a man who badly needs a heart transplant. Dr. Linda knows that this operation cost thousands or even millions of dollars so she rejected the person to have the transplant that could save his life. The man who has been refused to have a heart transplant dies but Dr. Linda argues that no one should be liable for the death of the man because she only saves millions of dollars for the company. A co-doctor asks Dr. Linda through phone call if she knows that the patient really needs that operation for his survival. Then, Dr. Linda replies, “Yes I know he will die without that surgery”. The co-workers of Dr. Linda are very happy; although, on the other hand, Dr Linda really feels guilty and mad about what happened because of her decision.
She even felt the guilt when she saw a huge sculpture in their headquarters which cost almost the same as the heart transplant operation of the person who died recently because of her unfair decision. After that tragedy Dr. Linda resigns at the agency she works with. Then she transfers to another health agency which also gives a high salary for workers. She accepts the offer as a medical manager – the same position she had before. She works for the company as what it should be but a couple of days have passed, Dr. Linda finds that her new agency is applying the same treatment to patients the way her previous agency does. Dr. Linda has conflicts with the cost-consciousness of the agency so she stands against the agency and gets out the management system. She resigns again and finds a particular person who has the same objective in terms of rehabilitating the medical agencies’ form of management. Dr. Linda together with her partner dedicated their life to correcting these unscrupulous practices. There are some unethical behaviours that we can observe in this film. In this movie, the health agencies value money more than the lives of the people who need their healthcare. The act of selfishness and greed is also emphasized. People are going to be more materialistic and it’s not a good attitude to have because it could lead to many conflicts in the society and even in personal life.
