No matter what generation we are from, our lives today are driven by consumption and capitalism. The nature of capitalism revolves around creating artificial needs for people in order for them to flex their pockets and wallets in order to consume a particular product or commodity—essentially, it creates an illusion of need to satisfy the greed.
“End of Capitalism” by Angela Ferraiolo shows the attitude of people towards capitalism as well as its character was highlighted. One of the most striking statement in the Flash movie was when she said that “widget is a symbol”. I think it depicts how machines—although not absolutely—took over humanity. The laborers have become part of the mechanical society functioning like a robot, hence, Marx’s concept of alienation.
Also, one of the defining element of the movie was its plainness and bluntness that it provokes consciousness. It provides the audience to mull over the dual life of cash under the ideology of capitalism that serves as both the foundation, the source of a “free” society and as a fetish for goods and services, a sheer symbol of “real” value.
Ultimately, the movie not only provokes consciousness, but it also stirs up sentiments of frustration and resentment with the state of the society today and how the emergence of capitalism put it in shambles.
The “Seedsigns of Philadelpho” at first, I thought it did not make sense and was incomprehensible. I think that the author was deeply inspired and influenced by Philadelpho, a Brazilian poet, in terms of literature especially in poetry. Angela’s work reveals an expression of admiration for Philadelpho.
