In a case in which the nominee for the party is in doubt, due to a lack of delegates and their rivals being unwilling to concede to them the nomination a contested convention allows the delegates to be redistributed. While the candidates that arrive will be bound to carry the delegates that they won during their campaigns with them after the first round of voting this would likely result another split, much like the primaries. At this point, the delegates would be freed from the candidates in order to be redistributed at the will of the voting parties, at which point the rounds of voting would continue until the delegates were apportioned to a clear winner. A contested convention would therefore allow me, as Marco Rubio's campaign manager to attempt to increase his delegate count.
I would advise Rubio to attend the convention and to keep his delegate count until the voting continues. I would advise him to attempt to take as many of Kasich's and the other candidate's delegates as possible. I believe that he would be able to take Ted Cruz's and Kasich's delegates without much trouble if he were able to establish a strong coalition around himself. For this reason, I would advise him to not release his delegates during the first round. He should attempt to unify the other party members around himself in opposition to Trump. This would essentially allow him to establish a stronger base. He would be able to pull in those votes that were unwilling to move towards either Trump or Cruz. This strategy should focus on the prioritization of efforts towards uniting the entire base of the party under Rubio while taking as many of the votes away from his competition as possible.
