If I were a correctional administrator at the boot camp, I would subscribe to the psychological, sociological and behavioral model of treatment for these offenders. I would prefer the use of this model rather than the medical model even though the medical model is more commonly used. This model is preferable because it will account for all aspects of the life of the offender rather than just the offender’s psychological status. Conducting a risk assessment of the offender and evaluating these factors can allow for a better understanding of the offender which would allow for treatment more specifically addressed to the offender. I think it is important for these specific offenders because they are at their last resort. Obviously, more effective treatment is needed. This psychological, sociological, behavioral treatment model could enhance the effectiveness of treatment at this facility and result in a decreased rate of recidivism. There must be consideration given to the fact that these offenders are nonviolent. The psychological, sociological, behavioral treatment model should be used so as to prevent the offender from moving a nonviolent offender to a recidivist violent offender. Additionally, these men at the boot camp have at least a high school education. Providing treatment that could address furthering the education of the offender could also make the boot camp a more effective rehabilitative correctional facility. Effectiveness of a facility depends largely upon the ability to rehabilitate offenders who are then released without further offending. Thus, by providing the psychological, sociological, behavioral treatment model, not only will the facility become more productive and efficient, the offender will have more likelihood of becoming more productive as a citizen as all of his needs are addressed.
