Birth Order
Birth order is the way sibling follow each other by age. Many psychologists believe that a child’s behaviour and personality are determined by their birth order(Leman, 1998). It can leave an impression on a person’s way of life. The birth order captures the firstborn, middle born, youngest, an only child and twins. Factors such as parenting, genetics and also home setting can affect a child’s personality or behaviour(Krohn, 2000)
The firstborn child
First born children are believed to be conservative, aggressive, organise serious, high in self-esteem just to mention a few. First born children learn about an aspect of power at a very tender age. It can be shown in their ability to protect, lead and help others. At some point, the first born may come to feel unloved when his or her parents have another baby. It may lead to competition among the siblings and it can result to sibling rivalry. Parents tend to put the first born child under much pressure and give him or her lot of responsibility so as to make them succeed in life. It may in turn make the first born child be ambitious.
First born children are usually easy to spot. They are normally nicely dressed and well behaved. It can be because they want to be good role models to their younger siblings. They are afraid to fail because their younger siblings look up to them and also because they feel the need to impress their parents. They also tend to be goal-oriented. Most of the first born children have a love for the sport. They may engage themselves in different games and athletics.
Parenting also dictates the first born child’s behaviour. All parents would like their children to succeed. Parents want their first born children to be successful in order to role models in the family. They will teach them how to be responsible and how to be a good example to their younger siblings.
