The Myanmar Kyat (MMK) has is showing a gain of 198.9 or 19.26 percent for the past 12 months from its previous stand of 1,032.50 in February of last year 2015. The history shows that the Myanmar Kyat was able to reach its highest rate of 1316.50 last December of 2015. The lowest rate for the Myanmar Kyat was 847.95 that was recorded about four year ago or last October 2012.
The line graph shows that in as 2013, the Myanmar kyat is continuously moving up in the third and fourth quarter with a rate of 970. It slowly moved up in 2014 to 990 until it reached over 1020 in the second quarter of 2015. The Myanmar kyat reached its all-time record high with the rate of 1316.50 last December of 2015. In 2016, it is expected to increase just like other markets, where it may be influenced by several factors such as the limitations imposed on import and export restrictions, money transfer, currency exchange, trade restrictions or government policies. Thus, these factors can cause the rise and falls of the Myanmar currency. The rate of the Myanmar kyat is also dependent on the US dollar. Compared to other neighboring currencies like the Malaysian Ringgit, Thai baht, or Singapore dollar, the influx of Myanmar kyat also depend on the number of people who work overseas. As expected, there can be a large volume of money transfer from the countries where they are employed. Thus, the rate or value of Myanmar kyat as against the currency of such country is expected to rise. The fluctuations on the Myanmar currency exchange rate may also be affected by the number tourists who go to Myanmar during the winter months, where the tourists spend US dollars in the country. As a result, during this period, the rate of US dollar against Myanmar kyat is expected to fall.
As of July of 2015, the statistics have shown that Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the country grew by 268.325 USD Million. From 2012 until 2015, the average rate of FDI in Myanmar was close to 518.07 USD Million, and it reached its highest of 2443.39 in USD Million as of August of 2014. In July of 2013, the lowest rate of FDI was recorded at 21.82 USD Million. It is expected that the FDI of Myanmar will continue to increase based on the history reported by the Central Statistics Organization of Myanmar.
