Altitude is the distance between a reference point and a person or an object. It is usually in horizontal or in the vertical axis. Attitude is an external or internal show of like or dislike to a thing, place, thing, person or event. It is also defined as distinct and very important model in existing social psychology. It originates from persons present and past. Attitude is quantifiable and unpredictable as well as determining a person's feeling and conduct. Attitude is in two forms, explicit and implicit. Implicit can be said to be subconscious while explicit is deliberate. Jung’s is a form of attitude and is defined as willingness of the mind to proceed or counter in a certain way or manner.
In many cases, the failure or success of individuals solely depends on the attitude they have. Attitude is inseparable from motivation. People with a bad attitude do not have a motivation while people with a positive attitude possess great motivation. In the story under study, we encounter an individual who has a bad attitude and no motivation towards mountain climbing. From this individual, we are able to extract problems associated with this individual’s negative attitude. One of the concepts is being argumentative. This individual does not know the importance of the activity. She even influences the rest to the extent of inviting them to a discussion on the same. It was the expectation of the manager that Lena would make it to the top of the mountain, but to the contrary she could not make it. Negative attitude does not help individuals to meet their expectation or the expectation of others. Lena could not meet the expectation, and she admits it and sheds tears for failing to make it (Harrell).
A bad or negative attitude seeks support and affirmation from others or from the environment. Lena seeks support from her mother. Bad attitude causes lateness or irresponsibility, Lena was late to wake up on the day of mountain climbing. She found the rest of friends taking breakfast. Lena creates a picture of “This is not possible”.
Probably the rest of the group noted her attitude before they embarked on the activity. This creates a bad reputation considering that the managers were there. This reputation is not good for people who are looking for a great career ahead. The management would not involve her in a more challenging activity or assignment. Lack of motivation or negative attitude of an individual brings others down due to the influence. It results to doubts and many question about an issue rather than comfort.
Since attitude may be defined as the heart of how you perform an activity. Honor is the best solution to a bad attitude. It is important to teach our children at a tender age to have a positive attitude. An angry heart results to a bad attitude, therefore parents should train their children to deal with physical encounters. Attitude should also be introduced in the school’s curriculum at the primary and tertiary level.
