Every private organization in the United States of America funds needles exchange programs. Such programs provide addicted with sterile needles. On one hand, such programs help lower risk of transmitting HIV or other blood borne disease from one addict to the other. On the other hand, many citizens claim that such programs do not help reducing the amount of addicted. I would like to point out advantages and disadvantages of such programs so you can decide whether to support this program or not.
Some addicts are willing to stop taking drugs, however, they do not know how to do that. When in the program, an addict receives not only free sterile needles, but also brochures on how to decrease the amount of drugs used, as well as how to manage their stress when trying to give up. Moreover, drug addicts receive psychological and emotional support. People, working there, let every addict feel that he, or she is needed and not everything is lost in life.
Another advantage of the programs is that they help addicts and former addicts find a good job, a house and social services.
The main disadvantage of the program is that it does not help reduce the amount of drug users, nor it helps reduce the amount of drugs used. It is a commonly known fact that drug use is increasing. Some suggest that needle exchange programs influence on increasing the amount of drug users among young people.
It is up to you to decide whether to support the needle exchange programs or not. However, I suggest that the programs have more advantages that disadvantages.
