There are many causes of incivility in our society today. One of the reasons for incivility today is television or rather technologies such as the internet and social media (Williams). Television creates incivility because young boys and girls try to act like the characters in television movies and series so that may look cool. Television series and movies mostly portray tough kids as those who act and talk rudely. Young boys, therefore, think that it is okay to serve as the boys portrayed on the television. Television also represents popular girls as those who use rude terms and act rudely. Young girls, therefore, tend to act as the girls on the television, so they dress and act like them. This has contributed immensely to incivility in our society today.
Another major cause of incivility in the society today is the society itself. The society has contributed in some ways such as accepting the rude behaviors and doing nothing about it. Children who crave for attentions, for instance, tend to use swear words and behave rudely to attract attention. Most of such children in today’s world are rarely corrected as research shows that parent’s willingness to guide their children has declined (Williams). The society has also contributed in that many people no longer take into account other people’s feelings when they talk and act. This, therefore, leads to people acting rudely towards one another. Technology has catalyzed this. The increasing use of technology decreases interaction between individuals. Therefore, individuals do not know how to treat each other right because of lack of interaction that helps understand one another feelings.
Therefore, the primary causes of the decline in civility in the society causing it to be a problem are technology and society. Technology encourages the imitation of rude behavior whereas society encourages incivility by not correcting offensive behaviors and not taking into consideration people’s feelings.
