However, as the members of this generation are still young, the possibility of this happening remains. Thus there is support in this genogram for both inherited tendencies in physical illness, mental illness, and substance abuse and the relationship effects of a serious physical illness.
I learned several important things during this process. First, the farther away from the first generation you record, the more complicated the record becomes. In order to keep the genogram clear, decisions have to be made about what persons to include and what persons to not include. I also learned that divorce and remarriage makes the genogram process much more complicated. I also found that although it is logical that physical and mental illnesses have genetic contributions, the likelihood of this being true becomes much clearer when it is put into a visual format such as a genogram. Additionally, the possible highly negative effects of having a serious physical illness on relationships is also much clearer, at least for this family, as the only unhealthy ones are for someone who is seriously physically affected. Overall, the experience of putting together the genogram was an interesting exercise that could be useful in the future evaluations.
