Courage is the strength and strong determination to fight all odds and stand up for what is right and needful. It is to face hardships, dangers, uncertainties and pain, fearlessly. Courage also involves crossing the threshold, i.e. to step out of one’s comfort and secured position and embark on a journey full of risks. I see Joan of Arc as one of the best examples of courage in this regard, who stood up for the rights of her country and people. Her humble and simple background, yet bold and firm determination to fulfill God’s will and command in spite of all the adversities is absolutely astounding.
Joan of Arc as we know was a simple young girl from a village in France, who had divine visions about saving her country from the hold of the English and the Burgundians. She was even considered a saint and a warrior. Joan was truly a courageous woman who in spite of her simplicity had the determination and boldness to speak to King Charles about her visions, through which she assured him that he was the rightful heir to the throne. To step out of home and fight battles with other soldiers, for the country’s freedom, was certainly a bold step for a woman in medieval ages. She not only encouraged the soldiers during wars, but also fought the battles with them.
Womanhood never deterred her from doing what was required, and in fact she accomplished her mission with complete dignity. It’s commendable how she protected herself from being raped by dressing in pants and tightly tied tunics.
Joan of Arc was a woman of strong determination and courage, who boldly faced the enemies and stood up not for her own personal motives, but for the freedom of her country.
