When reviewing the resumes of perspective candidates, it is important to take a holistic view of each applicant. While GPA is an important aspect of a candidate’s resume, GPA alone should not be the sole determining factor in the decision to hire or pass on a candidate. Only those candidates that had extremely low GPAs, such as in the 1.0s, would I automatically discard. The reason for this is that although GPA alone is not indicative of a qualified and successful employee, a candidate should be able to demonstrate that he or she is able to a maintain a minimum threshold of academic quality. Anything below a 2.0, absent exceptional or exigent circumstances, tends to show that the candidate may have a lack of work ethic or drive to succeed. I would also be interested in the types of extracurricular activities the candidate participated in. When examining the activities, I would take special notice of any leadership positions the candidate held or other positions that demonstrated qualities of leadership.
For candidates who have very little relevant work experience, their academic credentials will be more important. For candidates that have prior work experience, however, the specific nature of the responsibilities and duties should be considered more heavily than academic experience. This is because a candidate who has prior work experience in a relevant field is most likely more qualified and possesses the necessary skills and knowledge needed for the current position. While a candidate with no experience in the field should not be automatically excluded from consideration, since this candidate has no work history to show, his or her academic credentials will need to be at a higher standard to demonstrate the potential for success.
