Bisphenol-A (BPA)
In a world such as ours today, it seems we are going plastic all the way. However there is one particular chemical which is called Bisphenol A (BPA) which is added to the process of making plastic containers that are used every day. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (2014) states that, “BPA is an industrial chemical used to make polycarbonate, a hard, clear plastic, which is used in many consumer products.” Such a chemical dates back to the 1960’s and is still used today by manufacturing companies.
Bisphenol A has, become a vital necessities in products that modern day consumers use on a daily basis. The use of this chemical has been extensively expanded and is not just limited to the use of plastic. Epoxy resins; also incorporate the use of the potent chemical it serves as a protective lining on the inside of some metal-based food and beverage cans on the market and is present in many item purchase today.
As with any chemical there are the advantages and the disadvantages which can lead to damaging health risks, it is of the view that such chemicals as Bisphenol A affects estrogen level which is a natural hormone in the body. Such use also results in Autism which affects children. It has the potential to influence obesity in adults and children. The Bisphenol A, chemical is noted to be associated with certain types of cancers such as breast and prostate. Studies have also been
carried out and conclude that very low dose of Bisphenol A might be associated in the abnormal development of penis in males and early sexual influences in females.
The Food and Drug Administration is fully aware of the concerns that are plaguing the customers mind on the use of Bisphenol A (BPA) in packaging and foods. The United States government conducts numerous studies and research on the safety level of this chemical as to reassure the public that is safe for use.
