The theatre play Bitten by a Snake is one of the most intriguing yet classic eye openers of the backdoor events that happened during the chaotic and violence-filled American Civil War of Independence. Most of what common people know is the events that happened involving high profile characters during the war such as Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, and other high-ranking officials who basically served as the head of that revolution. Majority of people, despite the fact that they claim they are highly historically aware, do not know what lies behind the major events in the war—which are, the challenges and hardships that the tens of thousands of ordinary soldiers experienced during violent and blood-spilling conflict between the American people and the European enslavers.
This is the main source of the dramatic tension. The ordinary soldiers were the ones who encountered the real tragic and violent experiences during that war and not the prominent characters that people seem to idolize so much. The plot presented a new contemporary perspective about the events that happened during the Civil war, a perspective that was well hidden in the shadows of the main characters—the heroes and villains.
The technique used was like that of a Greek chorus, which is not necessarily a bad thing because there was a slight variation to it. There were real and actual movements around the stage as each of the many actors on stage’s lines were delivered in a ping pong style, which led to perfect timing and transition of every scene.
The presentation of the plot was also unique in its own way. Conflicts that involve only two sides, the right and the wrong, have been established as a cliché. The presentation of the conflict in the Bitten by a Snake was simply a lot more complex than that. It embodied history, irony, lionization, revisionism, and most of the time, confusion. The overall result of all these salient techniques was an interesting piece about the dreadful, dark, and controversial events that happened not only on the front but also on the backstage of one of the most historically significant wars in American history.
