- My experience of acting as a branch managers involved a variety of diverse duties to be performed and challenges to be met. It was quite challenging for me to ensure compliance of staff’s performance with all laws and regulations, direct staff’s work and provide on-site leadership. At first sight it seemed to me that facilities manager’s duties are far less important than mine, but then I understood that particularly facilities manager is a person, who organizes the workspace, manages all the services, obtained by the firm and provides directions and control to ensure qualitative performance of facilities support team. Facilities manager ensured my concentration on my work without being distracted from it by any discomfort.
- I partly agree with each of the definitions provided, except the narrow one, offered by an interviewer at the video iii. So, it is absolutely true for me that facilities manager is a “management generalist”, who learns about the variety of things and manages the work of support team. I also agree with the fact that the main task of facilities manager’s activities lies in “promoting employees’ productivity, comfort and safety”. In other words, it is about “supporting core activities”. As for me, the first definition lacks mentioning the aim of facilities manager’s work; the second one should also refer to facilities support team; and the third one seems to be a bit too broad and ambiguous.
- Here I would like to cite a definition of facility management, cited by Atkin&Brooks: “ a profession that encompasses multiple disciplines to ensure functionality of the built environment by integrating people, place, process and technology”(4). I chose this definition, because it contains the term “integrate”, which seems to me the best one to address the activities of facilities manager.
- After completing my degree, I will definitely become employed by a big company. So, I will be inevitably involved with the activities of Facilities Manager, who will do his best to help employees run core business activities of the company. Moreover, Facilities Manager’s support will be useful in terms of developing brand loyalty through influencing the image of our company.
