I think Wiesel is writing this essay for the dead. He talks of the great Yiddish and Hebrew poet who lost his family, and being alone, he makes words. Wiesel refers to his reluctant use of words. The Hebrew poet writes to his dead family as do Wiesel. He entered literature through silence having survived death, and he knows it is a mandate to explain his survival and escape from death since it was his role as a witness. The dead cannot give their opinions by word of mouth. The language of the dead is inhuman; it is like that of an animal. Family members die only to be brought together by death, and having a shared grave, they become distant from the world of the living. They lose their memory and thus forget soon. They are not able to do things like singing, shouting, listening and laughing which they used to do when they were still alive. Their shouting is silenced. The writer says that he owes the death his roots and memory, to tell of their death though painful; contrary to this he will be forsaking them and himself too. Killers murder children making them unable to eat and drink. They are driven to the world of the dead where they will stay forever. The living cannot understand the world of the dead even if they read every material written about the dead since they do not belong there. Once one has belonged to the world of the dead, they will always do, that is why when one survives death the chance he/she has is only to speak to and for them. In the Bible, the presence of death is seen on mountains on various occasions and thus they are part of everything. They celebrate their life and hope in joy that they deserve happiness. When people of every kind are murdered, they belong to the dead and lose their position amongst mortals. When one dies, he goes through a moment of silence that is why he sings in silence in accordance to the strength given to him to replace the silence with words. When he is asked why he writes, he says that he writes for the dead.
