For the task at hand, I chose an article that deals with a topic that is not only very pertinent, but also personally significant to me. David Bowie, Prettiest Star, as its name implies, deals with the life and the recent death of David Bowie, one of the greatest and most important musical icons ever to walk the earth. Lucas Fagen, who wrote this piece, is clearly a big Bowie fan. We can deduce this by both the affectionate way he writes about him and the knowledge he seems to possess with regard to the singer's fruitful career. The article itself informs us about the many personae Bowie would inhabit, his lengthy musical output, and the musical legacy and influence that will stay behind him to inspire millions of musicians and musical enthusiasts.
Fagen begins his article by trying to briefly sum up Bowie's career, which is in itself a daunting task, considering that in more than 40 years of writing and recording he produced great music with astonishing continuity. He goes on to mention the many incarnations of David Bowie, who was among other things known for his subversive, idiosyncratic personae that went along with his often revolutionary, but always evolving music (Fagen). It seems that the only continuity that can be ascribed to Bowie is his unfaltering love for music and art.
However, It's not only unadulterated praise that Fagen has for Bowie. Everyone who listened to the famous singer knows that, to put it mildly, Bowie had a very peculiar voice. The author doesn't fail to mention this fact, name-dropping some very important artists that were inspired by Bowie, but themselves, conventionally speaking, were able to sing a lot better than he did (Fagen). In the closing paragraph of his article, the author talks about some of his favorite Bowie albums, painstakingly describing their musical nuances and moods that they evoke in him. It is clear that Fagen is very familiar with all aspects of Bowie's career, that he is one of the millions of fans who listened to Bowie's music religiously and with great dedication.
