History is written by the victors. How truly this statement resounds in our world today, not only in Britain where David Hare originates but also throughout the world. The victory he refers to is the political victory of the British politicians who were victorious in the elections of the seventies to produce the modern democratic viewpoints that must be reflected in society in order to be accepted today on stage and off. Hare laments the bygone age of questioning the values of society that advocate the single-minded social and financial values of today. Questioning a market driven social order, he says, leads to one’s rejection by society to the point of being booed off the stage of life. There is no room to question today the accepted values of the Western world.
David Hare has always admired those who have creatively presented alternate perspectives of what social order should be like in Britain. He stops short of recommending it for other countries. He also points out that the Nationalization of the arts has had its rewards producing more opportunities in theater but he prefers the traveling theater groups that expose the theater to more people. To see a theatrical production has become more financially prohibitive for many. Attendance at the musical Hamilton could set you back $400USD per ticket. Even at that price, the production has been sold out. Hare feels, as many do, that theater should not be only for the privileged few. Hare also mentioned the fact that Broadway and Hollywood have dominated modern day theatre. They are the victors in the battle for the stage and who will determine its history as well. America may end up writing this history.
The story of Alexander Hamilton in the recent musical Hamilton portrays a victor in many ways. Even though he died tragically because of a duel, he is still remembered for his victories because he was such an important figure in creating the American Constitution. He was also a successful army general, federalist, and financier. Hamilton is not someone David Hare would likely emulate.
