In the world of business, dealing with other people is synonymous to breathing. Each day, people from all walks of life walk in and out. Being in the company of diverse people is what I enjoy most about being in the business sector. I have worked in a bank for years. I deal with clients and co-workers that at times are demanding. I also worked with teams and I am proud to say that I have handled common team problems with professionalism and respect.
There was an instance in my previous work that I had a debate with my team mates due to promotional ideas. The task given to ask was to come up with a ‘gimmick’ to boost customer satisfaction. When we were brainstorming, one of my co-worker kept on refuting my ideas and thought of it as ‘too risky’. I defended my ideas because I felt that they were new and innovative. Of course, we had to meet in the middle because she kept on saying that it will only target a certain number of customers. She had a point when she mentioned that it is important to keep in mind that we are aiming for a wider demographic, but I also do not see anything wrong with trying a new campaign scheme. The diversity in our beliefs caused arguments during the planning phase but in the end we managed to come up with a good plan. I knew that misunderstanding and difference in groups are common elements in diversity.
I managed to overcome the difference in opinions by learning how to listen to other people. Most of the time people refuse to listen to others and as a result limit themselves from achieving their fullest potential. During the arguments in the marketing plan, I saw the point of thinking about a scheme that would capture the interest of more people instead of focusing only to a certain audience. When we appreciate both our works and of others, we can come up with methods outside the traditional practices. . Each worker is vital components in the company that keeps it functioning. When you work in the team, do not think that you are just a member, but rather think that you are ‘a’ member who is valuable and can contribute. When we limit ourselves to the job description given to us, we also limit the opportunities and chances we get.
I have a strong background and experience in working in the bank. And in the future I wish to flourish in the banking sector. I have developed my communication skills throughout the years. One my advantages is that I can speak four different languages. I feel that communication is very important in this industry because you need to speak the language of the word. I am not talking about the literal language, but your ability to strike conversation with different people. One needs to learn how to behave and react in different predicaments. I give premium in professionalism especially in handling difficult cases. I learned that when you work with other people you need patience because everyone is different. There are times where you just want to walk out of the conference room because the discussion is heading nowhere and no matter how hard you explain, the person you are talking to refuse to get the point.
When I decided to pursue a MBA despite graduating with a degree in Computer Science, I knew that it was a big risk on my part. My coursemates in the degree will be laps ahead of me because they most probably took business related courses for their undergraduate degrees. I was not afraid because my positive outlook and attitude will fuel my desire to do well despite my disadvantage.
