Depression is a condition that affects the lives of many people. As depicted in the film, Depression: Out of the Shadows, this illness is not unique to any background or any particular age. It cuts across the whole generation with varying consequences. The most striking theme depicted in this source is the aspects of life that lead to depression. Scores of examples, through the numerous case studies considered on the source, highlight divergent reasons as to why a particular individual developed depression. Additionally, the incorporation of health experts in the video explaining the reality of depression and discussing the various theoretical perceptions of what causes this disease is of paramount importance. Through explanations provided by the health professionals, it is evident that a trauma has close links with depression. In cases where depression has already developed, trauma amplifies the effect of this illness. On the other hand, it acts as a causative agent in cases that depression is not pre-detected. This is culminated in the case studies that are either directly or indirectly referring to traumatic cases.
I noted that Major Depressive Disorder, Dysthymia and Substance Induced Depressive Disorder (SIDD) exhibit divergent characteristics in different patients. As a matter of fact, the depression one suffers is to a large extent dependent on the causative agent or experience that culminated it. Additionally, there are distinct characteristics exhibited by patients suffering from each of the conditions (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Fundamentally, I would consider the preference of studying as many case studies as possible to get first hand information of not only how these illnesses are contracted, but also how these patients regard of their conditions. Furthermore, consultations with psychiatrists and health professionals on this case, is necessary to build scientific, medical and behavioral explanations for its prevalence.
