Discipline is required in every individual to be successful in life. It is the training of oneself to follow rules and regulations in any environment. Most times discipline is associated to giving punishments. It has originated from the Latin word “disciple” which has the meaning “to teach or to mold”. There are two approaches to discipline. When people are punished for their wrong actions then it is a negative approach and when people are rewarded for their good works it is a positive approach.
It is important that the employees of a company are disciplined and follow the rules and regulations of that company. Sal was a person of discipline and was able to satisfy his employer Herb, who had hired him before six months. Herb observed that Sal was not as disciplined as before as the responsibility given to Sal was not carried out as expected. Herb observed that the reason for his indiscipline was that he was smoking marijuana. To discipline is to bring about a change in a person and to regulate his mind to keep himself away from unwanted behavior.
Herb had the responsibility of disciplining Sal. Keeping in mind his service to the company as well as his situation Herb should try to make him understand that he needs to change to avoid any bad consequences. The principle of progressive discipline can be used for the correction of Sal’s behavior. An initial counseling may correct the employee failing which the formal process of discipline can be used.
Herb should take the different steps like verbal reprimand, written reprimand, and suspension without pay before firing Sal. When the employee understands and corrects himself the incident need not be reported as it is within the authority of the supervisor. Any decision taken should consider the interest of the company as well as the employee.
