The purpose of the nursing according to this Orem’s self-care deficit theory is to help individuals gather their self-care needs. It focuses on people within the society who are affected by environmental or human conditions correlated with their states of health as well as their requirements for health care that result in an inability to provide continuous care for themselves. Orem’s theory uses the five key concepts as an outline as follows. The first step is concerned with self-care, whereby a nurse is required to learn behaviors that a person can perform for herself or himself when she/he is still capable that contribute to their well-being. This knowledge will enable the nurse to advise a client accordingly (Alligood, 2013). Secondly, a nurse is required to establish of Self-care deficit which is concerned with a relationship between actions that a human should take for healthy functioning and the capability for the identified action. The third key concept is a self-care requisite which involves the determination of the needs that are universal or are associated with the development of a person or deviation from health. Thus, a nurse has to apply a self-care demand which involves engaging in therapeutic actions to meet the needs of a patient (Alligood, 2013). The last key concept is the agency which involves assessment of the capability of an individual to engage in self-care. Basically, according to Orem, nursing is concerned with the needs of an individual for self-care actions that are aiming to sustain life and health, recover from injury or disease, and cope with their effects. Additionally, according to this theory, the nursing care assists clients to meet the basic human needs and achieve desired health outcomes.
In regards to professional nursing care for Mr. R. I will use the following interventions to enable him to meet his desired health outcomes (Alligood, 2013). First, I will teach him on the importance as well as how to maintain sufficient water, food and air intake. Secondly, I will provide him with health care that is associated with elimination processes and excrements. Thirdly, I will show him how to maintain a balance between solitude and social interactions and more so between activity and rest. Fourthly, I will teach him on how to prevent life hazards, well-being and body functions which are threatening to a temporary colostomy. Furthermore, I will promote human functioning and development within the social set-up of Mr. R. in accordance with potential known limitations and the desire to be normal.
