Jobs and career websites help in skill assessment as they offer various career guidelines. Information provided on these sites enables an individual critically to evaluate key attributes such as skills, interest, strengths, weaknesses and potentially which form basis in making informed employment decisions. Acquisition of relevant information needed by employer from the job and career websites, results to better job search as job seekers acquire adverse job requirements and qualification (Cappuzi & Stauffer, 2012, p.5).
Career websites provide valuable information on how an individual can write a captivating resume and how best to prepare for any interview. Presentation of well-documented resumes increases chances of landing on an interview, therefore, increasing chances of obtaining employment. When guidelines on how to prepare for interviews are adhered to employability increases as common mistakes made during interviews are minimized (Autor, 2009, p.27).
Job website provides a considerable amount of information on jobs available on various organizations hence one can access thousands of job opportunities. Job hunting sites have reduced problems of knocking various officers to ask for whether they have a vacancy (Kirby, 2010, p.78). It has also led to increased job search across the entire globe, therefore, the chances job searchers landing into their dream job also increases.
The two sites also help in sharing of strategies used in job search among various job seekers, potential job seekers are able to compare and adopt new strategies that can make them secure job opportunities. Adoption of better strategies increases chances of obtaining employment. Proper investigation into remuneration packages, roles and functions that a job is entitled results to making well-informed decision on whether to accept or reject job.
Rapid change in graduate job market has raised heated debates in the media all over the world. In most countries number of graduates entering the job market, has been a major headache as they exceed job opportunities created yearly by their respective countries. Studies show that more than half of graduates are unemployed or embark on opportunities that do not require a bachelor degree (Sullivan, Sheffrin & Perez, 2012, p.385).
Technological changes and restricting of economic activities have also influenced hugely on the graduate job market since graduates. Graduates who entered the market recently are performing quite a wider range of tasks compared to their counterparts who graduated in the past (Sullivan, Sheffrin & Perez, 2012, p.385). The number of graduates, however, faces problems in matching their skills with the jobs available and securing competitive remunerations as most receive payment below minimum wage rate.
Graduate job market change has a strong correlation on my career aspirations. The rapid change in the value of degrees with university education viewed as less valuable than the past periods has a great impact on my career aspiration. Shrinking employment opportunities, as a result, of the influx of graduates has increased competition for graduate jobs. Possibilities of being among the jobless graduates, made me review my thinking towards self-employment instead of job seeking.
