Introduction
It is a considerable time for the capital to stand up and say “Yes We Can” for its statehood. It is time to fulfill the fifty years “l have dream” speech of Dr. Martin Luther King. The common lyrics of Luther vibrate in the minds of US citizens. The patriotic song lyrics borrowed by the Luther that freedom should ring “From every mountain side, let freedom ring”. Luther encouraged the US citizens to let freedom ring not only Colorado snow-capped Rockies and Pennsylvania heightening Alleghenies but also from Georgia Stone Mountains and every hilltop of Mississippi. Dr. Luther though he forgot one place of which he later bothered about is the District of Columbia. The time is here and if it is not today, it is now for the statehood of Washington DC (The DC Voting Rights Movement N.p).
The desire for statehood of Washington DC will be alternatively acquired if the citizens of the US living in DC will be guaranteed freedom and their concerns being addressed effectively. It is however, clear that their rights will be addressed and guaranteed without the desired statehood since the constitution defines their rights. However, this seems an alternative if statehood of DC fails.
It is considerable that the rights and freedom of the quite liberal minds of the US citizens at Capitol dome are not maximally achieved and they will only be achieved after the statehood of Washington DC. It is a wonder that despite attaining all the prescribed requirements for statehood, Washington DC is not yet a state. It is unimaginable that Washington DC is a home for more US citizens than the states of Wyoming and Vermont, but it is unfortunate that Washington DC has no voting representative in the house of congress.
Considering the federal revenue contribution, Washington DC contributes an estimated $3.5 billion dollars in federal taxes. It is too unfortunate that we have no voice in determining how the contribution is spent. Washington DC sends several students sons and daughters to fight for a democratic world but it is untoward that democracy is not put into practice at home. As the memories of our fore fathers and fighters for freedom in the US, it is time for Washington DC to appeal for blessings of liberty that will let it vote in a representative to the house of congress. It is to surety that it is the desire and hope for the Washington DC residents to have freedom ringing from Mount St. Alban, from where ascends the grandiose National Cathedral. The desire for the statehood of Washington is not only for the sake representation but also as a sign of freedom for the American natives who feel not yet free.
The disenfranchisement of the citizens of the US residing in Washington DC is sign of the status quo existence. However, the way out appears to be too much simple: Give statehood to Washington DC. The solution is simple but it has not yet achieved. The main reason why DC is not a state by now is the greed for power that the various congress representatives have. Additionally, the representatives from these states are that they are impressed by the situation of DC. They want DC to continue contributing to the Country economic basket with no representation over its use and distribution (WriteWork contributors 4). It is evident that various residents of Washington DC are not at ease with the disenfranchisement of DC as it is frustrating. The citizens of DC have fought the battle for centuries, literally but it is unfortunate that they have been failing. Interestingly they have never lost hope, generations have been there, and they will be there to ensure that it ends a state since it has qualified to be a state. Finally, Washington DC requires statehood.
