Characters: The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey is a modern science fiction novel for young adult readers with Cassie Sullivan, Ben Parish and Evan Walker as the major characters.
Setting: The events occurring in the book are set in the modern world whereby the Earth is invaded by the aliens.
Background: The author describes how five distinct, sharp waves destroy everything. It shows how people were once living peacefully but the arrival of aliens destroys everything and their beloved planet.
Event 1: The first event occurs with the destruction of all electronics by an electromagnetic power.
Event 2: The second event happens when all coastlines on the Earth are destroyed by the dropping of a huge bar from space.
Event 3: With the third wave, almost everyone on Earth is wiped off due to an altered Ebola virus.
Turning Point: After the third wave, it was discovered that a number of human beings are going to be turned into aliens as they become hosts to alien genes. I believe that the turning point of the book is the anticipation of the fifth wave as Cassie (living alone in woods) and Ben (dwelling at a refugee camp) tries to survive in a world no longer understandable to them.
Resolution: As Cassie made a promise to his brother, Sammy, that she will make him free from the alien military base. The brave girl keeps her promise and saves her brother with the help of Ben and Evan.
In my opinion, this book is a great and interesting read especially for people who like science fiction themes including extraterrestrial beings, space ships, and aliens.
