Every electronic device used by the consumer has an inbuilt tracking device that stores some information helpful for tracking. People use many devices innocently on a daily basis without knowing that their work on these devices is being spied. Many employers keep a track of their employees’ movement during the work hours to track their productivity. Hotels use surveillance cameras in the lounges, kitchen, pathway to see the movement of the customers and the staff. The consumers are unaware about being tracked by these devices and they sign up for many services and software’s with little or no knowledge about being spied.
Seth Schoen from Electronic Frontier Foundation has cracked the codes that are invisible on the printing paper. These codes are in form of yellow dots that are not visible to the naked eye, and when decrypted they provide important information such as the serial number, date and time when the paper was printed, and it is easier with these codes to know who printed the document. This was done on request by the US secret service agency that investigates forgery. It is easier to crack these codes on the papers manufactured by the technology companies such as Xerox and Dell; however HP and Canon are still a mystery.
There are many tracking software’s’ available on internet, and by using a right software it is easier to find the complete details on an image captured in a camera. The CD’s that are burnt contain certain codes that can track back to the computer where it was burnt. Apart from tracking through the spy cameras, and global positioning systems, few hotels also update the customer personal details when the customers call for a seat reservation. Hotels use this data to celebrate the customer’s date of birth or anniversary which is a good technique to develop customer relationship, but it can also be unethical if the customer is not informed about being tracked.
