Impact of Technology on Criminal Justice
Impact of Technology on Criminal Justice
Certainly, technology has taken over the world in literal terms. Precisely, there is no societal entity that remains uninfluenced by the influx in the use of various technological innovations that have evolved immensely across various settings all over the globe. The criminal justice system occurs as one of the most comprehensive sectors that have and continue to be influenced by technology. As such, technology plays a critical role in defining the future of various issues aligned with the criminal justice system (Shahidullah, 2012). The most promising technological feature that will have an immense influence on the criminal justice system is the Global Positioning System, which is often connoted as GPS.
Speaking of the GPS, this connotes to a technological innovation that allows one to receive information regarding various issues. In the field of criminal justice, this technological innovation plays a critical role in allowing people to receive information pertaining different crimes. Certainly, this will proved a viable platform that enhances a reduction of various crimes that have been eminent across various societal settings. As such, this system will go a long way in supporting the criminal justice system in curbing the occurrence of different societal delinquencies (Shahidullah, 2012). The most precise way in which the GPS will become essential to the criminal justice is in cases where the GPS devises will be placed on probationers, registered sex offenders, and parolees.
Placing these devices on these offenders will ease the process of monitoring them. Certainly, this will limit the need for various parole officers tasked with the role of monitoring these offenders. Instead the parole officers will be posted to other criminal justice job cadres whereby they will be given other tasks that enhance the mutual progress in the field of criminal justice. In addition, the use of the GPS in tracking criminal offenders will ease overcrowding in prisons, which has been an issue of immense concern in the recent past. Precisely, offenders committing light crime will not be sentenced to prison (Shahidullah, 2012), but the GPS trackers will be placed on them and this will go a long way in minimizing the overstretching that has and continues to be experience in the field of criminal justice.
