This is a country song that was composed by Billy Ed Wheeler and Roger Bowling. It was recorded and sung by Kenny Rogers. It was released as single on 12th November, 1979 and incorporated into the platinum album ‘Kenny’. It is one of the best hits and successful songs by Kenny Rogers. Coward of the county is an excellent piece I have not listened for quite a while approximately five years. When I first heard it was in my teen in college years, I immediately fell in love with the song. The sound and the beats of the song are soothing and comforting. I would often close my eyes and let the song steal my mind away. This would make me forget the troubles of my life for a moment. The story line is outstanding. You cannot help being glued to the seat as you listen to Kenny Rogers telling the story of the coward boy. He is eloquent and organized in narrating the storyline hence you can repeat it as many times without getting bored. Every time I hear it, it feels fresh and new. Essentially, during my college years, I used to face bullying and other challenges of college life. Thus, I would lock myself to my room and listen to the song. It inspired and gave me the encouragement that all would be well despite the hardship I was facing.
However, listening to the song right now it sounds completely different. This is because I feel the beats are too fast, and the singer (Kenny Roger) is like shouting. I cannot close my eyes and let the song travel through me since the beats are too fast. In my opinion and observations, the old age is catching up with me. On the other hand, the song still gets my attention, and I still enjoy listening to the song since it has a soft spot in my life.
