Nursing practice is a very important part in the society. The society is composed of different cultures. Having knowledge of the diverse cultures in the society is very important in the nursing practice. Education about different cultures and their influence in the delivery of healthcare is essential for nurses whether they practicing in education, a clinical setting, administration or research. Cultural diversity addresses racial and ethnic difference. Nurses have their personal culture as well as philosophical ideas of education into the nursing profession. It is necessary for the nurse to understand the interaction with the patient because three cultures come into play: the culture of the patient, the culture of the nurse and the culture of the environmental setting.
The delivery of culture relevant medical care improves the access of health. All the nursing curricula contain information about diverse cultures, healthcare beliefs and practices. This education programs helps nursing students to understand that cultural beliefs and practices are important to the delivery of the nursing services.
The education delivered to the nursing students has an impact on how the nurse will perform professionally. The students need to know everything about cultural diversity (Callara, 2008). When the nurses are equipped with the correct information they will work well in the society. This is because they understand the culture of the clients. The quality of training offered to the nurses has a direct impact on the quality of service delivery to the society.
Understanding the patient’s view of health is very important. This broadens and strengthens delivery of the education to the patient. A perfect example is where different cultures utilizing traditional health care providers. The group identifies and respects these providers. When the nurses understand this, it will be easy for them to deliver the education that will promote health in the society.
