Computer has become a very popular technology in the contemporary society. It has become more useful especially by the invention of internet which has been used to connect people together regardless of their geographical location. As much as it grows, the computer technology has been used by the children for educational, communication and recreational purposes. For example, they can use the internet to access reading materials. At the same time, they can use emails, chat rooms, and instant messaging services to access their friends. However, this has negatively impacted on them in different ways.
First, the constant use of email, chat rooms, and instant messaging services has deprived these children an opportunity to exercise face to face communication. This is because these texting services are used to send messages and receive feedbacks without physically meeting the recipient. Secondly, it has led to the loss of writing and speaking skills. As a texting service, it does not involve any spoken word. Thus, it results into the loss of verbal and non-verbal communication skills. However, this is a very unfortunate experience that seriously interferes with their interpersonal relations in the society. Lastly, the internet service can be exploited by the internet predators and used as a platform to coax unsuspecting children and kidnap, con or turn them into sexual objects.
I therefore recommend that parents and churches should display a lot of concern for their children regarding the use of internet. They should censor the use of internet and appropriately advise the children on how effectively they can use the internet without exposing themselves to such dangers. They should be properly counseled on how uncontrolled use of internet can be harmful to them. Both the parents and the religious leaders can help in protecting children from such dangers because they have a lot of control over them. The church should actively offer guidance and services to the children to protect them.
