Introduction
The theory was developed with the aim of improving the quality of nursing and health care services. The concept of theory helps in creating different approaches to health care in various phenomena. The theory is applied by nurses in guiding and improving health care practices even though it must be consistent under validated principles and laws. Therefore, the paper elaborates on Orem’s self-care theory basing on its assumptions, concepts, clarity and application in nursing professionalism.
Evaluation of Orem's Self-care Theory
The theory assumptions include;
Everyone is supposed to become reliant and responsible for themselves and taking care of their family members.
The Orem’s self-care theory assumes that people are different.
The theory indicates nursing discipline as a form of actions which ensure interaction among people.
The knowledge potential of a person contributes in promoting health care through self-care.
Finally, both self and dependent cares are categorized as learned behaviors using social and cultural contexts.
Examining Four Concepts of Nursing Metaparadigm
The nursing metaparadigm includes humans, health, nursing, and environment.
Nursing
This concept is indicated as an art that enables the practitioner to provide specialized health care assistance to human beings. The practitioner’s assistance helps people with disabilities and hence becomes more than ordinary assistance in achieving and meeting the needs for self-care (Bernier, 2002). Furthermore, the nurses use their intelligence in participating in the medical field in the provision of health care to people.
Human
It indicates social units or individuals who require the assistance of direct health care. Human consists of children, women, and men in the society.
Environment
This concept consists of physical, chemical as well as biological features. Environment covers the family, socio-culture and even the community at large.
Health
Health is considered as being in a good health status. It is a state that constitutes the health of a person or group (Description of the Model, 2017). Human health is related to the ability of a person in reflecting on one’s self as it symbolizes his or her experience and how to communicate with others.
Discussing the Clarity of the Theory Using Lucidness and Consistency
The Orem’s self-care theory portrays both lucidness and consistency attributes. Using the lucidness attribute, the Orem’s self-care theory is easily understood and completely comprehensible on issues relating to self-care and nursing assistance in health care (Hartweg, 2014). The Orem’s self-care theory elaborates on nursing metaparadigm that explains the roles of all the components that are involved in nursing health care provision. It helps in understanding the rationale of health, human, environment, and nursing at large and how they contribute at nursing professionalism.
Under the attribute of consistency, the Orem’s self-care theory has shown conformity in health care assistance application to ensure logic, accuracy, and fairness in self-care. The theory elaborates on the different aspects that nurses are supposed to consider and involve the people when dealing individual or society in health care (Hartweg, 2014).
Application
Examining How the Orem’s Self-Care Theory Would Guide Nursing Actions
The theory plays a major role in guiding nurses in health care services delivery. Basing on nursing practices, the Orem’s self-care theory provides a framework that initiates the operations and conduct in working places. The theory relates clearly to approaches that nurses are supposed to undertake to patients self-care (Hartweg, 2014). Furthermore, the Orem’s Self-care Deficit Theory provides mechanisms for nurse on what to apply in ensuring continence of care. This is under theoretical concept whereby the Orem’s self-care theory set goals that make the foundation for nursing practices (Bernier, 2002). Therefore, Orem’s self-care theory of nursing provides expanded avenue that allows and guides nursing research on both theoretical and practical health care perspectives.
The theory guides toward the organization and application of the nursing process in different phases. These phases include an interview and physical examination of patients (Description of the Model, 2017). The theory contributes in nursing, diagnosis, and evaluation of different health care cases.
Describing How Orem’s Self-Care Theory Is Used in Dialysis
The theory emphasizes in self-care of patients and enhancing their contribution to self-wellbeing. The theory of Orem’s Self-Care is applicable in contributing to the development of nursing work such as dialysis approach. In dialysis, nurses highlight the nursing processes and possibilities of stimulating the self-care to patients (Description of the Model, 2017). Therefore, the theory provides a framework for self-care analysis essential in dialysis.
Conclusion
The theory enhances self-care to patients with the objective of improving health care. Every person is responsible of his or her health and hence playing a major role as an individual or social health care. The Orem’s self-care theory applies nursing metaparadigm that includes humans, health, nursing and environment to elaborate different aspects of participants in health care. The theory provides a platform for nursing practices and processes to enhance health care and improvement of self reliance among the patients. Therefore, the self-care is supported by Orem’s self-care theory to enhance responsibility and participation of patients in their health.
