Defined as the surrounding or the condition in which a person operates, environment remains a major factor which influences the academic performance of students. The school environment which includes the library, laboratory, technical work shop, school management, teaching methods and peers are main variables that affect academic achievements. Having gone to St. Elizabeth high school in South Africa, there is total difference with Fremont high school as students have to deal with serious challenges as compared to our school. These challenges in turn affect them negatively. The author of this paper therefore argues that, despite other facilities that may intimidate smooth learning, environment remains a core factor in education. Hence, the school environment is an important that should be well managed to enhance academic performance.
St. Elizabeth School is located on the southern part of Pretoria about 100km away from the town. In its steep geographical alignment, it is situated in an area that is sparsely populated. Unlike Fremont high school, which is located inside Los Angeles town and relatively populated, St. Elizabeth provided ideal and conducive environment for learning. The area is quite silent and the trees provide the weather suitable for learning. Maria and Spigno (315) Argues that poor health factors that may be related to ventilation discourages students hence may lead to absenteeism. I believed we performed since the institutional structural space was guaranteed.
St. Elizabeth School was safe and well kept. The bathrooms which were sufficient were at all times kept extremely clean and within the geographical phenomenon of tuition activities. This ensured proper time management. Conversely, Fremont high school had few bathrooms which is shown to be visited at certain durations and located far from the classes hence humiliating in case you want to visit the toilets. In case of lunch which happened to be enough to students, was split in four sections. This accelerated faster serving period hence enough eating time. In his article about time and education, Julien (230) argues that since time is one of the materials which we cannot influence, those who observe it are most successful. Hence, in St. Elizabeth we observed time of which I believe was a key factor to our success.
Another problem that would send me away is not being in a position to receive the classes of my dream carrier. I see in Fremont students have no opportunity to choose the courses that would allow them easy entry into colleges. A school is an asset that molds ordinary people into important individuals (Sain, 315). Why would somebody suggest for me what to do? I find this to be the most traditional, awkward and irresponsible act in Fremont. At St. Elizabeth, selection was one’s ability and the dream of what he wants in life. This made most of us identify areas we are good at by academic record and assistance from teachers.
In conclusion, if I would have been given a chance in Fremont school, I would have a tantrum. High school is about career objectives and students should be allowed to select courses that they want. Time management is key factor to success, it should be observed. Putting toilets far from classes, scheduling specific time when they can be attended is time wasting and humiliating. Space and a quiet environment with minimum distraction encourages concentration ability hence essential for positive academic performance.
