Emergency management is an important aspect in all industries. Each day, people run at risks of natural and manmade disasters. However, emergency management teams play a vital role in ensuring that situations are brought under control and casualties minimized. Managers need to possess skills and competencies that will help them respond to catastrophic events within an organization. Some of the important requirements managers will need to be able to respond to emergency cases include;
Critical thinking and decision making skills
Emergency management calls for sound thinking and decision making to ensure that the managers are capable to adjust in case any plans change. Emergency situations may change rapidly; managers thus need to be in a position to make assessments and conclusions using their critical thinking and problem solving abilities in such a time of high stress (Reilly & Markenson 34).
Communication and coordination
In emergency situations, managers need to be able to communicate concisely and clearly to many people and various groups. Managers require the ability to communicate and coordinate events in an effort to solve a crisis despite their range in personal thoughts.
Delegation and supervision
Managers need to learn the art of delegating duties to members of a team in cases of emergency. Apart from just delegating duties, it is good for managers to ensure that every member of the team is performing their task properly and the persons in the team are made to understand that the risks involved in the responsibilities given. Delegation of duties is a skill required by managers in disaster management and requires tact, diplomacy and interpersonal indulgence (Phelan 78).
Time management and Organization
In the events of disaster, it is important for managers to possess time management skills in order for them to know the tasks that are of high importance and need first priority (Haddow, Bullock, & Coppola 97).
