As an engineering student, this was the first time I faced a situation wherein I had to use my engineering knowledge and leadership skills to steer a project that I had been given charge of. After numerous courses, internships and extra classes, it was finally time for me to step into the shoes of a leader and achieve the goal that had been set to approximately twenty five of us.
The project involved the manufacture of a certain spare part that could later be fixed into the parent machinery for effective use. We were asked to submit test units of the spare part and subsequently produce a certain number of those parts within the requisite deadline. At first, things seemed to be quite easy. The complications developed in the later stages of the project and it is at this crucial juncture that the leadership and management skills came in to play an important part.
It was quite difficult to manufacture the test units within time and so was the case while planning the manufacture process through the engineering lab. As a leader, there were various aspects that needed ample attention some of which included the time constraint, allocation of work and resolving conflicts that were impeding progress. It was quite important to plan things effectively and steer the project in the forward direction.
I did not gain from a materialistic aspect but there was surely a lot that I learnt as I led a group of talented individuals of my age through this project. The art of mixing engineering expertise with proper leadership and management is worth an experience that I imbibed from this project.
