A cell is a functional, structural and a biological unit in all living organisms. They are the smallest unit of life and can replicate independently. Living cells exist in both plants and animals. They have some fundamental requirements that enable to sustain themselves such as electron acceptors, electron donors an energy source and even a carbon source.
Carbon in living cells and mostly plants is every vital for the plant cells. Plants intake carbon dioxide in the process of respiration and with the addition of water and energy obtained from sunlight, it makes glucose and produce oxygen gas. The formation of glucose from carbon provides chemical energy in the plant.
The sun is the primary known source of all cell energy. Plant cells, photosynthetic prokaryotes and also algae obtain solar energy through photosynthesis for use in making complex organic food. Then other plant cells use this energy in order to sustain their growth, metabolism and also reproduction of the plant. Humans, on the other hand, seek their energy in the form of sunlight and food obtained from plants in order for their living cells to function.
Electron donors donate electrons to other compounds and become oxidized in the process. Plants and animal cells can make cell energy that aids in the cell functioning. The electron donors give out their electrons to the electron acceptors. These electron acceptors get reduced in the process due to their oxidizing character. Oxidation in this process between the electron acceptor and electron receptor lead to the production of cell energy. Elemental nutrients are mineral elements that are required by living cells for an individual function, for example, the nitrogen and phosphorous which are for meeting the needs of the cell to work properly.
