For purposes of addressing this topic, I will be discussing a short video clip of Jack Welch who is a legendary CEO of General Electric and a management guru. In this short video clip of only around 8 minutes long, Jack talks about the management styles that should be practiced by the managers in the society of today. He starts his discussion by stating that management should not be only for personal benefits but rather for the benefits of the whole society. He states categorically that the main function of a manager is to grow his/her people and make them flourish. On the other hand, he says that a manager flourishes from the reflective glory of his or her people. In carrying out this activity, Jack recognizes that a manager is likely to experience some obstructions, and thus not everyone is going to grow. However, he adds that a manager should all the time love to see his or her people grow and become successful.
Jack also adds that the purpose of management is to create an environment of success and excitement. He says the essence of management in society is to create organizations that allow their members to be in them because they love these organizations but not because they do not have alternatives. Management should allow people to buy into the organizational values and be happy to stay in their organizations. Therefore, Jack emphasizes that managers should adopt management styles that create an environment of success and excitement. In order to demonstrate further that the essence of management is to create an environment of excitement, Jack uses his Institute of Management. He states that Jack Welch Institute of Management has been successful due to the good management style that has ensured that both the tutors and the students are happy.
In this short video clip, Jack also states that the essence of management in society is to encourage people. He gives an example of how he used to encourage the members of his organization (General Electric) through having a meeting with each of them and telling them the areas that need improvement. Therefore, Jack advice the managers to adopt the leadership style that encourages and helps to improve the performance of the organizational members. He adds that this management style will make the organizational members stay longer in the organization, and they will not wish to leave the organization. However, Jack emphasizes that for all this to happen; the manager should not be cruel to the employees, but rather he or she should be a kind and loving person.
Jack also states that the essence of management in society should not be to make people suffer through firing or retrenchment during hard times. On the contrary, he says that the aim of management is to help solve the problems amicably during such times. Nevertheless, Jack stresses that for this to occur, the managers have to adopt good management styles that can enable them to handle such cases successfully. Finally, Jack also states that the purpose of management is to build up teams in an organization. The teams are vital to the success of the organization and the society as a whole. In conclusion, Jack says management is all about bringing great life and great future to the members of society.
