Working at Maimonides Medical Center as an Internee has allowed me to understand and appreciate life with a new perspective. I am fortunate enough to get the hold of this opportunity as it has provided me the essential tools for reaching my goal of becoming a nurse.
Initially, I was quite uncertain whether I would be able to handle the professional responsibilities in the healthcare industry. To jump into a hospital setting from an academic setting was relatively different. This is because I thought that theoretical education and practical experiences are entirely dissimilar. However, my fears and apprehensions disappeared once I started contributing as a member of the Internship Program. Now, I am responsible for admitting and discharging patients, going around and comforting the ill and answering patient call bells. Similarly, I answer and transfer phone calls to the relevant doctors and physicians. It is also a part of my duty to take specimens to lab and return borrowed equipment and supplies. In addition, I also page doctors and nurses. It would not be incorrect to state that my emotional and mental state has been absolutely positive since I joined this program as I was prepared for the unexpected and adapted myself to my workplace environment.
As far as my professional capacity is concerned, I have got to know various skills and qualities I possess. For instance, I have the ability to handle both small and big tasks with effectiveness. My working efficiency and time-management skills have made it possible for me to demonstrate a great work ethic. Furthermore, it is an esteemed opportunity for me to collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals on a regular basis and deliver quality care services to the clients and patients. I am able to comprehend the true meaning of professionalism now as the member of a multidisciplinary team.
As I mentioned earlier, I did not expect myself to render services as an absolutely competent Internee. However, I take pride in saying that I have surprised myself by surpassing my own expectations. If the truth is told, I did not believe I could do half the work that I am doing now. This, this experience has been extremely beneficial for me to develop various personal and professional skills. For me, the most unforgettable part of this whole experience is the fact that how this opportunity allows me to connect with every patient on a personal level. It really amuses me whenever a patient calls me by my name. I feel extremely grateful that I can touch lives and make a positive difference in someone’s life.
This internship has undoubtedly confirmed my aspiration and decision of becoming a medical professional. The reassurance given by this internship concerning my goals is extremely encouraging and I hope that I model myself as a proficient individual in my future career. In fact, this internship has turned out to be an excellent platform for me to support my career development. It is definitely a great opportunity to nurture and advance my interpersonal, communication, and management skills.
