Introduction
Quintilian on linguistic education:
In the article of Harris and Taylor, the importance of an orator in relation to education and their impact on the society is well elaborated. The best orator should not only be perfect in speech but also in aspects relating moral character and advancement of the roles of a citizen. The orator should guide the citizens on matters of both private and the public interest. This therefore shows that linguistics play a very crucial role in the advancement of western education. This is indicated by the rhetoric of Quintilian who was very distinguished as an orator. Rhetoric was considered an important component of dialects in sociolinguistics (Harris, 2014 p. 59).
Quintilian elaborates the difference between the public service and moral philosophy. The challenges of eloquence in the study of ethics and moral philosophy were clearly identified among the orators. Rhetoric tries to discover means of persuasion under any given subject. The orators can only equip themselves fully through careful analysis and keen observation of linguistic guidelines. This enables them to capture the attention of the public through good communication skills.
In my opinion, this article played an essential in facilitating the role of rhetoric by careful consideration of grammar. This article has also facilitated the correct expression and interpretation of the information to the public. The significance and impact of rhetoric in the society are well explained in the article. This also shows that rhetoric plays an essential role in relation to the writing of the information both for private and public use by the orators. There is therefore a strong connection between the rhetoric and linguistic education.
Linguistics and Writing: A Reassessment
Parker and Campbell
In the article by Parker and Campbell, the importance of linguistics in improving and enhancing style and grammar to aid the invention processes is clearly outlined. It is also shown that the failure of linguistics towards style and grammar is mainly due to the fact that they are based on sentence composition and structure. The role of linguistics is shown to focus the attention of the teachers on the students so as to facilitate the smooth and effective writing skills as an important component of linguistics. The importance of linguistics in research and Pedology is elaborated in this article. It is also clear that composition and linguistics are interdependent in presentation of information. The importance of linguistics in the writing discipline is given much focus and light. The article also shows the role of linguistics in encouraging the positive change in the attitude of teachers in writing compositions and general field of communication both private and public (Parker, 1993 p.295).
I realized that this article shows the way in which linguistics facilitates the interconnection between various disciplines and field of study. This enables concepts to be integrated and facilitate comprehension of technical terminologies and concepts in various fields realized that this article played a crucial role in showing the functions of linguistics in facilitating communication and comprehension of different disciplines (Parker, 1993 p.297). The article is therefore very important in demonstrating the role and essence of linguistics in communication and composition writing.
Revising the Rules of: Traditional grammar and modern Linguistics
Brock Haussamen.
In the article by Brock Haussamen, the elaboration of how traditional grammar was used in communication and writing is clearly explained. The aspects of modern grammar and linguistics are also clearly shown and their impact on communication and writing. Traditional grammar was mainly based on foreign languages, making it difficult to fully study the details of such grammar due to the clash of foreign languages. Modern linguistics on the other hand gives emphasis on specific language and exhausts the linguistic and grammatical details of the language concerned (Brock, 1997 p. 6).
The article shows the fact that Grammar books are slow to adopt changes in the society due to the diverse cultural aspects which gradually. This makes it difficult for Grammar books to keep abreast of changes in the society. The predictability of changes in languages was very difficult due to the cultural diversities and dialects which keeps on arising from time to time.
Modern linguistics gives focus on items relating to sentence structure, pronunciation as well as tonal variations. This gives it an important role in communication since rules can be easily revised to suit the context of writing and communication.
In my opinion, this article is crucial in showing the importance of both the traditional grammar and modern linguistics. This also helped me to understand the advancements and improvements of linguistics towards effective communication and writing.
