David M Huebner, Gregory M. Rebchook, and Susan M. Kegeles (2004) wrote an article on the “Experiences of Harassment, Discrimination, and Physical violence among Young Gay and Bisexual Men,” where they examined the trend for six months. They recruited one thousand, two hundred and forty-eight gay and bisexual men from gay bars, and other joints they frequent. The men ranged from age 18 to 27 with 83% of the sample identifying as Gay while 16% identified as bisexuals. Self-administration questionnaire were sent to the sample via email and a token of $10 was given to each for them for participating. The results showed that 37% of them had experience verbal harassment for the immediate past six months due to their sexual orientation. The harassment leads to low self-esteem leading to doubling of suicidal ideation. Therefore, it is recommended that proper attention be paid to the Gays and bisexual to improve the low-self-esteem as well as reduce the suicidal ideation.
According to Barkan, the society has ways that influence the decision that one makes (Barkan, 2011). However, the society does not remove the diversity from the social setting even with the prescribed ideas. For this reason, the freedom of the gays and bisexual ought to be upheld or the time. Some decision are very personal and may have some underlying issues that go beyond the control of the person, such as being gay or bisexual. Harassment of the gays and the bisexual is an indication of suppressive society that disregards the inherent freedom it ought to uphold. No one ought to presume higher moral standing, espiciially on things that do not affect him or her, and condemn others.
