I yearn to teach my students in a setting where they feel safe, relaxed and stimulated. I believe that my teaching has a greater impact if students enjoy learning. I yearn to let them feel that our classroom is their home where they are free to speak out their minds, and share their creative juices with in their educators and their classmates.
I know that natural environment and their respective colors stimulate children’s senses. It is why I love to decorate the classroom with the pictures of animals and the verdant nature. Moreover, I usually put mathematical equations in colourful and oversized visuals. I know that colors and shapes always stick to the minds of children. In this way, they will easily absorb lessons. Moreover, chairs and desks are always set not in a very formal manner. It is set in a way that children do not feel intimidation specially that most of sessions that I am teaching is through workshops and play. I always make sure that the floor is covered with clean carpet so the children can take their shoes off and feel comfortable. This kind of environment I believe stimulates camaraderie among the children and the educator.
Before the school year starts, I always make sure that parents understand how I run my classroom. I call for an orientation after the enrolment to explain and encourage suggestion for a better classroom environment. The orientation also helps in giving the parents the feeling of security. It is during this session that I answer all their queries until they are satisfied. Once they appreciate my management, they will entrust their children. Parents will also be the one to explain to their children what to expect in entering the class.
My class is designed to balance the learning and the right of children to play. I make sure that all the exercises stimulate learning and enjoyment. It is also important to build the social skills of the children by giving time for team work, activities done in twos, and avoiding individual exercise. I believe that my philosophy in classroom management will result to higher impact to every child in the class.
