Catching my school van to ride home was one of the tensest moments of the day. I knew that if I missed my van, it would create bundles of worries for my parents. They would have to arrange for my conveyance home. They would also be worried about my stay at school after school hours. My parents are the protective type; they want to be with their kids every step of the way.
It was one such day when I caught my bus in the nick of time. We were chatting like usual in the school bus. My mouth was now dry from all the talking, and I decided to look out of the window; after all, it was very rare that I found a window seat on the way back. Far away, on the road side, I spotted a bundle of clothes. I narrowed my eyes to focus on the bundle in order to figure out what it actually was. As we drew nearer, I realized that the bundle of clothes was actually a little boy wrapped up in several sheets. For a moment, I was shocked. Why was a little boy lying down there, out in the cold, with no one beside him? Cars were driving by him, but none stopped to look at him. When I noticed further, I found that people were changing their track, just to walk on a track away from the path on which the little boy was lying down.
I was utterly shocked. At that moment, I had to decide whether I would like to be dropped off there, or whether I was going to ignore the boy just like everybody else. I knew that if I made the van driver stop, he would also question why I wanted to be dropped off. The van drivers also have a responsibility to drop off students only at their own stops. I was unable to decide so quickly, but I shouted out to the van driver. He immediately looked on the side of the road where I was pointing. However, he did not stop the car, saying that there were so many kids with him. “Where would all these kids go if I start helping that boy?” he said.
My heart sank as we drove by the little boy. I saw that he was breathing. He was alive. He could still be saved. I immediately decided to call rescue agencies. I requested the van driver to at least lend me his phone. However, he was hesitant. Only after I exhorted him for five minutes did he hand me his phone. I immediately called the rescue agencies. Later, on the local evening news, it was revealed that a boy had been found on the side of a road after receipt of a call.
I believe that no one acted because everyone is afraid of being blamed for something they did not do. Policemen later came to my house, to inquire about how I got to know about it. However, I was not afraid, because I spoke the truth. I still believe though that I could have asked my van driver to drop me off after taking permission from my parents. This is because when I told my parents, they were proud of what I did, and they said that they would not have minded if I had stayed with the boy, and helped save him.
