Parking space is a critical aspect of any business premises. The number of automobiles in the country has been on the rise in the past decades. It follows that investments that could have had ample parking space and failed to plan ahead cannot cope with the increasing demand for parking space. In this respect, the California State University Long Beach has no enough parking space.
Why analyze the University’s parking area? Parking is a central concern for commercial or residential facilities. Therefore, parking space deserves a merited consideration as a distinct land use that influences the environment and travel behavior of the people. The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning stated that the perception of the availability of parking space affects the economic competitiveness of an area (The Importance of Parking in Planning for Livable Communities, par. 3). From this perspective, the shrinking parking space in the University may influence the enrollment rate and other aspects in the future. Therefore, the need to analyze how to manage the existing parking space efficiently and expansion options are necessary.
The university management would need to know the result of the analysis. Although the management may be aware of the existence of the problem, there could be few or no proposals on how to solve it. As a consequence, the management would need to know the most efficient ways of managing the existing parking space to handle more automobiles and methods of possible expansion. Besides, the management may need to know how the perception of parking space affects the behavior of the people.
Various sources include data from the transport agencies on the rate of increase of automobiles, transport studies (journals) describing parking space challenges and solutions, and the institutions management policies. Besides, interviews of the institution’s’ relevant managers and car owners in the university would also provide critical data.
