One of the environmental theories that are more interesting and resonating to me is the theory of stimulation. I like this theory because I believe that visual, audial and other characteristics of environments which influence sensory systems play a significant role in our life. According to this theory, two factors affect the impact of environmental stimulation on an individual: an amount and meaning. The amount of stimulation can depend on different external factors of interaction a person with the particular environment. For example, is individual works in the particular building every day, the amount (frequency) of stimulation of that environment will be high. On the other hand, it also plays a significant role how a person interprets a particular stimulus of an environment. For example, some people have lower sensitivity, and they can tolerate the noise while other people hypersensitivity to the different stimulation and they become stressed and irritable because of these stimulations.
Once, I was living in one small city for several months when I was in a school age. There were a lake and a large park not far from my housing. Every time I went to or from school I was coming through the park where I listened to birds` singing and observed mothers and their young kids, romantic couples, etc. Because of such stimulation, I always felt my mood improving. Also, such walks and stimulation before and after school time helped me to become more interested in school `s activities or to relax after lessons.
Another environmental theory which I want to discuss in the paper is the control theory. According to this theory, the environmental settings` influences depend on that if a person has control over changing some characteristics or conditions of environment or does not have such control and power to change something in an environment. For example, a person, as a rule, has opportunities to move furniture, to decrease or increase the degree of noise, paint walls, etc. when he/she in the own house/apartments. At the same, a student who lives in a hostel together with other students may have fewer opportunities to change something in that place where he/she lives. For example, this student can like silence, but his/her roommates can listen to loud music, etc.
I always experienced difficulties when I was living in places where I was not a hostess, where I did not have the possibility to change what I want, to do what I want and where I cannot control environmental condition to satisfy my needs for comfort and others. For example, I had an experience of working as a volunteer during one summer. I lived with nine other volunteers in one room. This room was not like a standard room because there were no wardrobes where I could keep my clothes or other things. My roommates liked to invite their friends to our shared room and make until the middle of night. I, on the contrary, always wanted to stay alone in the room, have some privacy. Also, after work days, I always felt exhausted, had the desire to sleep and to be in silence. But I could not force other roommates to change their behavior; I could not ask for the personal room, I could not buy the furniture for that my temporal housing and I had not the opportunity to make that room more beautiful or comfortable. Also, there was no conditioner in that room despite the fact that even in the night it was a very hot temperature in the room.
Such environmental conditions and such lack of control over my environmental conditions had a very adverse impact on me. Despite that at the beginning of my volunteer work I was very enthusiastic, after some time of life in that bad condition (described above) I began to experience losses at the work, I was unsuccessful in performing my functions at the work, and I felt deeply unsatisfied. All that happened because of constant stress which I had because of the deficit of the comfort, privacy, rest.
So I believe that environmental factors, conditions can influence significantly our well-being, our productivity, emotional states, outcomes at workplaces, and our ability to achieve different goals.
