Qualities of good Managers
Managers are an important asset to any institution and their efficiency greatly affects the performance of the organization that they represent. They are, therefore, vital to better performance, and good managers are always an asset to their entity. A perfect manager is an embodiment of a few characters that include the ability of the manager to motivate, the ability to appreciate the staff and the ability to be an effective role model. By making use of these characteristics, the manager is able to push the employees to perform to the best of their abilities and enables them to learn and grow because of the likeness that the employees develop to their work as a result of them being motivated.
A manager who is successful in motivating his subordinates enjoys the work of employees who are loyal to their manager. They have better relationships with their employees and their employees in turn have greater reason to stick around. A manager who is able to motivate his employees could also empower them to perform the day-to-day operational tasks and can instead focus on the greater responsibilities momentous to effective functioning of the organization. In addition to the aforementioned benefits, managers who are able to have employees whose goals are aligned with the goals of the organization, in other words, there is greater goal congruence and therefore increased efficiency.
Appreciation of someone’s work is a quality that people respond to quite positively. People who strive to achieve their objective need to know that their work is appreciated. Therefore, managers who motivate their employees on a job well done are likely to find greater quality of work in their workforce. This is because when you tell a subordinate that he is doing good work, he/she in turn is stimulated to turn in work that is likely to satisfy the manager more often. Appreciation is also likely to retain the quality of work in the employees and give them a better idea of when is expected from them on the job. This way, the managers could achieve work that is up to the mark and in accordance with the requirements set by the organization. They also have to waste less time on corrections and achievement of quality. Appreciation expressed towards the employees is also likely to perk up the relations that employees have with one another.
Newer employees that enter the organization look for direction in three things; the organization’s culture, the stories that they hear from the other employees and from looking at the superior staff including the managers. The way in which the manager acts, therefore, gives idea to the employees regarding what is expected from them in terms of work ethics, and the method of accomplishment of their assigned tasks. Therefore, the managers should exhibit at the workplace the qualities that they expect and wish to see in their staff. In the words of the legendary Mahatma Gandhi, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.”
Effective managers always bring promise to their work environment because they are the only party that is responsible for converting inputs from the company into output with the help of a support system they could find in their employees. Therefore, how efficiently they could manage their workforce says ample about them as managers. It is never too late to try to incorporate the good qualities in your character that are a quality to the manager, because the organizational structures in our offices could change as many times as possible, but good managers would never fall out of appreciation.
